What makes our hikes different from the others ?

  • Our tours are private – no delays picking up other tourists from various hotels around the city. We pick up, then go!
  • Your English-speaking guide stays with you the entire trip (including the hiking).
  • Our guides carry 2-way radios (and a cell phone) in case of emergencies.
  • We use safe, reliable, government-licensed vehicles (e.g. mini-vans), not a dubiously-maintained family car or taxi.
  • We use professional drivers, not a “friend” making some extra money.
  • We save time by taking the direct routes, even if there are charges (rather than navigating back roads trying to avoid tolls).
  • With us, there are NO “forced shopping” stops !
  • There are NO hidden costs ! (e.g. fuel surcharge)
  • We are proud of our Wall. We want YOU to become an ambassador of Great Wall hiking too!
  • We not only want our customers to return – we want them to tell their friends!

Join us for a most-memorable trek on China’s Great Wall!

  • This trek includes the best hiking sections of the Great Wall in and around the Beijing area: the most-challenging sections of Simatai and Jinshanling, the unique underwater wall at Huanghuacheng, and the most-picturesque and sacred section of the Jiankou Great Wall
  • Accommodation en route will be a combination of hotels, camping, and local family guesthouses
  • No cooking required (all meals provided)
  • Separate transportation of all equipment and luggage

TRIP OVERVIEW:

This excursion covers different areas of the “Wild Wall” fairly close to Beijing, but which most tourists never have a chance to see. As a special opportunity offered to Great Wall hiking enthusiasts, this excursion will transverse the best hiking sections of  the Huangyaguan Great Wall, Simatai Great Wall, Jianshanling Great Wall, Guibeikou Great Wall, Jiankou, Huanghuacheng Great Wall, and Xishuiyu Great Wall.

Because we will be hiking several hours per day over 5 consecutive days, you are expected to be an experienced hiker, but the rewards will be well-worth the effort!

During this trip we will not only see the different types of Great Wall architecture and military design, but we will visit some villages at the bottom of the Wall and experience the day-to-day life of local people there. It goes without saying that photographic opportunities will be amazing!

DAY-BY-DAY DETAILED ITINERARY:
(B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner)

Day 1 Beijing-East Qing Tombs-Huangyaguan Great Wall (LD; 2 ½ hrs hiking)
After an early pick-up from your hotel, we will proceed directly to the East Qing tombs, about a 3-hour drive from Beijing, on good roads. These tombs far surpass in splendor and majesty their more famous predecessors, the Ming Tombs. Dating from more than 300 years ago, this World Heritage site is the largest imperial grave complex with surrounding natural landscape in all of China. It is the home of 5 emperors and 15 empresses (as well as numerous concubines).  Tastefully restored for the most part, this Imperial city is vast, grand, and uncrowded.

About one hour’s drive after our visit will take us to a small village, where we will start our hike westward to Huangyaguan Pass. This is a 2-hour easy hike with great view and an interesting visit of the Fortress at the bottom of  the Huangyaguan Great Wall. Overnight at the courtyard hotel at the bottom of Huangyaguan (two-beds per room with private washroom)

Day 2 Huangyaguan Great Wall-Simatai Great Wall-Jinshanling Section Great Wall  (BLD; 10 km)
After breakfast, we will drive from Huangyaguan to Simatai (about 3 hours). Upon arrival we will start our 2-day trek westward (not the tourist area), toward the Gubeikou section of the Wild Wall. Along the way, we will have a  picnic lunch while enjoying the vista on either side. After today’s  trek of about 10km we will arrive at the Jinshanling part of the Wall, where we will either camp on the Wall, or stay in the comfortable hotel at the bottom of the Wall, relaxing and enjoying the breath-taking sunset after our hard day.

Day 3 Jinshanling Great Wall-Gubeikou Great Wall-Huanghuacheng Great Wall (BLD; 10 km, 5 hrs hiking)
Today, mid-way on our adventure, we will continue to trek westward, this time from Jinshanling to the General Tower in Gubeikou. On the way, we will pass a military area which will force us to trek a short distance on a country road, away from the Wall. Today's trekking is easy because the Jinshanling section of the Great Wall is well-maintained. At the end of the trek, we will meet our vehicle(s) and drive to a small village at the bottom of the Huanghuacheng Great Wall. Overnight in a local family-style guesthouse (two-bedded room with public washroom).

Day 4 Huanghuacheng Great Wall-Xishuiyu Great Wall (BLD; 8 km, 4 hrs)
A short drive will take us to the starting point of our hike on the Huanghuacheng section of the Great Wall, where we will head towards Xishuiyu. The first half-hour of hiking will take us to a watch tower on the cliff overlooking the moon-shaped Huanghuacheng reservoir, down below, a great place to take photos. After a gentle up-and-down, we will then start a steep climb upwards, our goal being the highest tower of the route. Along the way we will choose a quiet place for our picnic lunch. After reaching the tower, we will have a rest and some time to look around before continuing our hike westward. We will have to pick our way carefully along the broken wall until we arrive at a cliff over looking Xishuiyu Lake. The view is amazing! From here, you can see the broken wall running directly down into a lake, with the endless mountain range in the background. From this point on, the Wall is too dangerous to continue our hike - instead we will turn back a little bit in order to take a small mountain trail downwards, into the Xishuiyu village, where our bus will be waiting to the small village at the bottom of Jiankou Great Wall. Overnight in a local family’s guesthouse (2 beds per room with private washroom).

Day 5 Jiankou Great Wall-Mutianyu Great Wall(BL; 10 km, 4-5 hrs)
Our last day is again great for photography! The Jiankou section of the Wall is known to be one of most beautiful part of the Wild Wall near Beijing, loved by photographers. After a half-hour climb upwards, through a gentle wooded area, we will clamber out onto a portion of the Wall not visited by tourists. The hike itself is quiet and beautiful - in about four hours of passing deserted sections of the Wall in its original state, we will get to the well-known restored section of the Wall - Mutianyu. What a difference between the tourist section and the original Wild Wall we have just seen! Our courteous and safe driver will then transport us back to Beijing before dinner. On our way, we can relax and reflect upon our accomplishment - 5 days of memorable hiking on some especially-chosen-but-rarely-visited sections of the Great Wall. Congratulations!

End of Tour.
