TRIP OVERVIEW: This excursion is shorter and easier than our 5-day tour, but still covers the best areas of the Great Wall near Beijing. If you have limited time, but still want to enjoy a Great Wall Adventure, this trip is for you! For those who have not yet hiked on the Wild Wall, the section of the Great Wall from Jinshanling to Simatai is absolutely the best choice! We will also hike the section of the Great Wall from Jiankou to Mutianyu, a sacred and picturesque area not visited by regular tourists at all! Because we will visit some of the most-picturesque portions of the Wall, bring your camera!
DAY-BY-DAY DETAILED ITINERARY: (B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner) Day 1 Gubeikou-Jinshanling (LD; 10 km, 5 hrs)
After an early pick-up from your hotel, we will transfer directly by safe van to the Gubeikou section of the Great Wall, where our 3-day hiking adventure will begin. The panoramic view is wonderful – partway along the hike, if the weather is clear, we will be able to see all the way to the Miyun reservoir and the Wangjing Tower in the Simatai Section. Along the way, we pass a military area where hiking on that area of the Wall is prohibited, you we will bypass this area by walking first to an interesting village nearby, and then rejoining the Wall in the Jinshanling section further on. For our first night, we will either camp in one of the watch towers in the Jinshanling Section, or will stay in a simple but clean hotel at the bottom of the Wall Day 2 Jinshanling-Simatai-Jiankou (BLD; 10 km; 4-5 hrs hike ) If we camp overnight on the Wall, we will wake up early enough to catch the beautiful sunrise, bathing the natural Wall in warm, gentle sunlight, just as it has done for thousands of years! After breakfast, we will continue to hike eastward from the Jinshanling to the Simatai section of the Wall. Today's hike will be a little more-difficult because, in this area, the Wall runs along the edge of mountain crests which are steeper than those we transversed yesterday. Although some parts of the Wall are really steep and broken, and we will have to proceed very carefully, you will see why hiking on this section of the Wall is well worth it! Although in the middle of the day the outside sun can be really hot, we will have our picnic lunch inside one of the beacon towers, where it is always cool. At the end of the afternoon, we will descend towards a cool, crystal lake at the bottom of the valley, where our bus will be waiting in a small, quiet parking lot. From here we will transfer to Jiankou section of the Wall, where we will enjoy the hospitality of a local family, staying in their guesthouse for our final night (each room with two-beds and private washroom). Day 3 Jiankou-Mutianyu (BL; 10 km, 4-5 hrs) Today is special! We will spend the day on the Jiankou section of the Wall, recognized as one of most beautiful parts of the “Wild Wall” near Beijing, and much-loved by photographers. Not visited often by “typical” tourists, this section is really rough and broken. Although we will have to be careful walking on it, the opportunity for pictures in this section is unequalled! With memories (and memory cards) full of pictures, we will then have a late lunch at a restaurant near Mutianyu, known for its delicious fish. After enjoying a leisurely lunch, we will start our drive back to Beijing. The comfortable ride in the late afternoon sun will allow us to reflect on, and cherish, various highlights we experienced during our unique adventure of the last 3 days. End of Tour.
