What makes our hikes different from the others ?

  • Our tours are private – no delays picking up other tourists from various hotels around the city. We pick up, then go!
  • Your English-speaking guide stays with you the entire trip (including the hiking).
  • Our guides carry 2-way radios (and a cell phone) in case of emergencies.
  • We use safe, reliable, government-licensed vehicles (e.g. mini-vans), not a dubiously-maintained family car or taxi.
  • We use professional drivers, not a “friend” making some extra money.
  • We save time by taking the direct routes, even if there are charges (rather than navigating back roads trying to avoid tolls).
  • With us, there are NO “forced shopping” stops !
  • There are NO hidden costs ! (e.g. fuel surcharge)
  • We are proud of our Wall. We want YOU to become an ambassador of Great Wall hiking too!
  • We not only want our customers to return – we want them to tell their friends!

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • This is a great excursion for a family, especially for a weekend!
  • The Tombs are well- worth a visit, the hiking portion is easy but still-interesting, and children always enjoy staying overnight in the clean and comfortable courtyard hotel, built right on the site of the Fortress!

TRIP OVERVIEW:

This is a good trip for children! The vast area known as the East Qing tombs will let them run, and the tombs themselves will give them an appreciation of Chinese history. The Huangyaguan Section is a good introduction to hiking on the Great Wall. It is not dangerous, and features some interesting structures, such as watchtowers, parapets, and fire-pits! This trip can be taken any time during the year, even winter, and always makes for an interesting weekend-trip.

DAY-BY-DAY DETAILED ITINERARY:
(B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner)

Day 1 Beijing - East Qing Tombs – Huangyaguan Great Wall (LD; 1 ½ hrs)

A CnAdventure representative will meet you early in the morning and we will drive directly to the site of the East Qing Tombs.  Unlike their more-famous predecessors, the Ming tombs, which has only one sacred way, at this site each tomb has its own sacred road, with splendid gateways, decorated pillars, and pairs of animals. Not only is it a memorable experience to visit the underground graves, but it is also a beautiful setting itself, with well-manicured grounds set amid a backdrop of mountains and trees.

Following our visit, we will then drive for about 1 hour to a small village, the starting place for our afternoon hike. We will hike westward for about 1 ½ hrs, toward Huangyaguan Pass  an easy hike with a great view along the way. Our target is the Huangyaguan Fortress, at the bottom of the Wall.  Overnight at the courtyard hotel (2-beds-per-room; private washroom).

Day 2 Huangyaguan Great Wall to a small mountain village (BL; about 4-5 hrs)

This morning we will start our walk, heading westward towards what appears to be a sheer cliff face, straight up! This is where we encounter "Heaven’s Ladder", a steep climb of over 200 steps leading us up the cliff face. Once we have caught our breath at the top, the path continues gradually up to the top of the ridge, where we will meet up again with the old Wall, which follows the contours of the mountain. At the end of the morning, we will clamber down the Wall as it gradually descends into the valley below, where we will enjoy a nice home-made lunch prepared for us by a local family. After lunch we will have a bit of time to wander around the village and to chat with the locals, before driving back to Beijing before dinner. If the kids don’t sleep on the way home from all their exercise, they will surely spend time reflecting on the exciting outing!

The end of the special cultural (Tombs) and architectural (Great Wall) hiking tour.
