What makes our hikes different from the others ?

  • Our tours are private – no delays picking up other tourists from various hotels around the city. We pick up, then go!
  • Your English-speaking guide stays with you the entire trip (including the hiking).
  • Our guides carry 2-way radios (and a cell phone) in case of emergencies.
  • We use safe, reliable, government-licensed vehicles (e.g. mini-vans), not a dubiously-maintained family car or taxi.
  • We use professional drivers, not a “friend” making some extra money.
  • We save time by taking the direct routes, even if there are charges (rather than navigating back roads trying to avoid tolls).
  • With us, there are NO “forced shopping” stops !
  • There are NO hidden costs ! (e.g. fuel surcharge)
  • We are proud of our Wall. We want YOU to become an ambassador of Great Wall hiking too!
  • We not only want our customers to return – we want them to tell their friends!

Join us for a memorable overnight excursion on the Great Wall!

  • Escorted hiking along one of the most-interesting portions of the Great Wall in the Beijing area
  • Comfortable overnight accommodation (or unique experience of camping on the Wall)
  • No cooking required (all meals provided)
  • Separate transportation of all equipment and luggage

TRIP OVERVIEW:

This is our most-popular 2-day excursion! Day 1 is fairly-easy hiking, getting our “hiking legs” limbered up. We will follow the Great Wall through the countryside, where we will have the chance to see villagers going about their day-to-day tasks. Day 2 will be more ambitious - we will hike along an original section of the Wall which follows the crest of the rocky terrain. Some parts of the Wall are steep and will require effort. Some parts are somewhat broken-down, punished by the weather after countless years, and will require careful maneuvering as we pass by. But other parts are simply marvelous, with protected watch towers and preserved vantage points. In short, the second day will offer some fantastic views, great for pictures, and not seen from the commonly-visited tourist locations!

DAY-BY-DAY DETAILED ITINERARY:
(B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner)

Day 1 Beijing-Gubeikou-Jinshanling (LD; 10 km; 5 hrs)
After an early pick-up from your hotel, we will drive directly to the Gubeikou Section of the Great Wall, where our 2-day adventure will begin. The Great Wall was built to protect China from attacks from the north, but it was here, at the Gubeikou Pass, in 1541, that the Mongols, under the leadership of Altan Khan broke through, and set the suburbs of Beijing on fire. Then, inexplicably, he suddenly took his armies north again, sparing Beijing. If the weather is clear, we will be able to see our ultimate destination, the Wangjing Tower in the Simatai Section, many kilometers away. Today’s hike will take us to a military area along the Wall, which we must bypass. We will take a pleasant diversion through a friendly village, and then hike directly to the Jinshanling section of the Wall, where we will stop for the night. We will stay in a local hotel near the Wall or, if the weather is nice, we will camp in the Watch Tower itself!

Day 2 Jinshanling to Simatai (BL; 10 km; 5 hrs)
If we sleep on the Wall, we will be up before sunrise to catch the sun throwing soft morning light onto the Wall itself, great for pictures! After breakfast, we will continue to hike eastward from Jinshanling toward the Simatai section of the Wall. Today’s hike is more-difficult than yesterday’s, as the Wall follows the contour of the steep mountain ridges, and because the Wall itself is very broken in many places. This is the Wall which is not seen by tourists! At lunchtime, if the day is too hot, we will have our picnic lunch inside one of the beacon towers, where it is always cool. During the afternoon, there will be many opportunities to take pictures of this authentic “Wild Wall” before we reach the restored tourist section at Simatai, where our bus will be waiting for us in the parking lot. At the end of the afternoon, we will be transferred back to Beijing before dinner.

To ensure all our groups have more time on the wall and shorten the travel time on road, we will go by a new high way which was open to traffic on Sept. 28th(saving about 1 hour one way, now it only takes about 1.5 hour from the city to Simatai Great Wall one way.).The tour cost was adjusted accordingly.
