China has a long history with the horse. Although the horse started in the New World 55 million years ago as Eohippus, it gradually evolved into Miohippus and migrated westward across the Land Bridge into Asia, evolving into the many forms we know today. Native North American equids died out and were not seen again until introduced by the Spanish in the second millennium CE. Asian horses were domesticated by tribes of the Mongolian steppes, and their riding skills are still legendary today. Throughout China, horses still play an essential role in the daily life of several ethnic groups.
A horseback riding excursion inspires images of galloping across an endless sea of sand, forging rivers, cantering through forests, trotting along age-old trails, gazing at beautiful vistas, camping next to remote villages or historical sites, and immersing oneself in the culture of real nomadic people. Hanas Lake is often called by locals as the most beautiful place in Xinjiang. You will not only behold its rugged mountain ridges and dense forests, but most important of all, an alpine lagoon that changes color with the weather. Its transformation can be quite dramatic; within a day, it can change from azure to emerald to dark green, or even display a hundred different shades of blue as you stand in front of the lake.

Two of us enjoyed a truly wonderful tour of Guilin, Yangshuo and surrounding countryside. Many thanks to CnAdventures for providing very helpful assistance and our guide, David, who was really terrific, both accommodating and informative. The trip provided a great deal of variety as we hiked, biked and rafted through some of the most gorgeous countryside I have ever seen. An unplanned side trip to the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terrace was a most worthwhile addition to our itinerary. Another nice aspect to the trip was the opportunity to sample some excellent local food along the way--stuffed snails and sticky rice cooked in bamboo were a couple of highlights along with rice wine and osmanthus tea.
